Professional Member Requirements

Supporting Member Requirements

Professional members of HEART must:

  1. Demonstrate commitment to positive reinforcement training principles by:
      • Currently working as a positive reinforcement trainer
      • Apprenticing with a positive reinforcement trainer
      • Been previously employed as a positive reinforcement trainer
2.   Attend one HEART meeting

3.   Agree to HEART's Professional Member Code of Conduct

4.   Submit an application for Professional Membership including 2 references

5.   Submit payment of HEART membership dues which must be renewed annually

Supporting members of HEART must:

1.   Attend one HEART meeting

2.   Agree to HEART's Supporting Member Code of Conduct

4.   Submit an application for Supporting Membership

5.   Submit payment of HEART membership dues which must be renewed annually


Professional Member Code of Conduct

SUPPORTING MEMBER CODE OF CONDUCT

As a HEART professional member, I pledge to:

Present myself, my business, and HEART in an ethical manner.

Provide accurate, truthful advertising and representations concerning all qualifications, experience, performance of services, costs and expected results.

Work within my professional limits when interacting with the public and providing dog training services.

Refrain from giving guarantees regarding the specific outcome of training.

Develop and apply training programs in accordance with HEART's guiding principle of positive dog training including:

  • Always using the least aversive method possible to mold, shape, teach and modify canine behavior.
  • Not using electronic, remote, shock or choke collars.
  • Using pinch or prong collars only as a last resort.
  • Not using corporal punishment, physical or verbal abuse.
  • Train through positive motivation, kindness, love and patience, not fear, pain or intimidation. 

Comply with applicable laws regarding the reporting of animal bites and possible neglect/abuse.

Treat all animals and humans with respect.

Refrain from publicly slandering other members, dog trainers and pet professionals.

Commit to continually learning and practicing to improve my knowledge and skills as a positive reinforcement dog trainer.

As a HEART supporting member, I pledge to:

Present myself, my business, and HEART in an ethical manner.

Conduct any and all training and behavior modification and interactions with animals using HEART's definition of positive rewards dog training including:

  • Always using the least aversive method possible to mold, shape, teach and modify canine behavior.
  • Not using electronic, remote, shock or choke collars.
  • Using pinch or prong collars only as a last resort.
  • Not using corporal punishment, physical or verbal abuse.
  • Train through positive motivation, kindness, love and patience, not fear, pain or intimidation.
